Fostering

Help us save more lives by becoming a foster parent! We need foster homes for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens, and for all different situations. The top three reasons our pets may need a foster home are:

1) The pet is underage.
Although some pets come to us when very young, pets cannot be adopted until they are 8 weeks of age. We need special fosters who can care for our four-legged infants until they reach 8 weeks. Sometimes these babies are fortunate enough to still have their moms with them, and we need homes with a safe quiet area for a mom to nurture her kittens or puppies. For those litters less fortunate, we need foster parents who can nurse and wean the puppies or kittens. We usually do not split up litters into multiple foster homes unless they do not have a mom and the litter is large in number.

2) The pet is stressed or maladjusted.
While staying in the shelter environment, some pets become increasingly stressed out and need a break. Most often this involves adult dogs that start acting out (barking at passerbyers, mouthing, separation anxiety, etc). However, sometimes we have pets that get depressed and stop eating and playing. The latter always need extra special fosters who can provide hours of love and attention.

3) The pet requires socialization.
Occasionally, we bring in pets that require socialzation. These animals may require socialization because they appear frightened of new environments, need more experience being handled, will not adjust to the shelter environment, or need specific training.

And don't forget: whenever you foster, you free up room at our shelter for us to rescue more animals. Please fill out this Foster Application Form and email nmcginn@petnetwork.org or call 775-832-4404 x111 for additional information.
